Girt by Fabulous Friends

How is  it that Australia Day has already come and gone??

When I was growing up the summer holidays dragged on for-ever.  Days were spent getting cuts all over our feet as we ran through the sprinklers on the front lawn. That was back in the non water-wise late 80’s. I was always excited to go back to school and see all my friends. The best part was getting all the new stationary and new books! How good is new stationary?! My excitement usually lasted about 1 week until I was hot (no AC in the classrooms) bored, and drawing over everything in front of me while staring out the window and wishing it was holidays again. Or wishing for a 40 degree day which meant that if your mum or dad could pick you up, you got to go home from school!  It cracked me up when I went to university in the USA that they were always wishing for “snow days” to get out of class (which never happened, despite one day having so much snow I was blocked inside my apartment by Mr Plow with snow pushed above the door so I couldn’t get out!).

So this all means I’m getting old (we won’t mention the very scary birthday I have later this year) because time just keeps zooming past me faster and faster.  But it is actually my husband who is getting really old, as the 26th was not only Australia Day, but his birthday.  Pretty cool to get a public holiday and fireworks on your birthday every year.

We spent the day, as all good Aussies do, enjoying the gorgeous weather in our backyard girt by close friends (I’m determined to use “girt” more often.  If it’s good enough for the National Anthem, it is good enough for me).  We decided to have a last minute BBQ featuring lots of Aussie-ness as we ate sausages, lamb (to make Sam Kekovich happy), prawns, salad, pavlova, mango cheesecake, tim-tams, lamingtons, and Allens lollies. Not to mention one or ten beers.  JJJ’s Hottest 100 was on in the background, with the fabulous Angus and Julia Stone deservedly taking out the #1 song with “Big Jet Plane”.

The party was too much for some, and when you are 1, the doggie bed is an awesome place to crash.

When you are 2, hanging outside eating Tim-Tams with the garden turtles is a much more fun place to be.

Nap-time over. There are places to be, and lanes to run up and down.

When you are a dog, and there is an occupant in your bed, the outside couch is the best option.

It was a fabulously cruisy day, celebrating my awesome husband, and our bloody brilliant country.  So I’m raising a glass to my husband and to Australia – I’m very lucky to have both.
