Roll Up Roll Up… or Maybe Not.

Come and see the greatest show on earth!!

Well..Maybe not the whole earth.  And not really the greatest.  In fact it’s kinda mediocre. I’ll try again:

Come and see the greatest show at the Claremont showgrounds this week!
Kinda cheating given that it is the ONLY show at the Claremont Showgrounds this week…

YES I am talking about the Royal Show!!  The last time I went to the show was in high school;  I have fabulous memories of doughnuts, fairy floss, toffee apples, show bags, getting those dents in your arm from carrying too many showbags, having the ink run from the showbags onto your arms, looking at the baby animals, and much more.   Hours were spent beforehand studying the showbag guide to figure out which one was the best, which one gave you the most lollies, and which one had the best (useless) toys.  Then when we got home it was amazing fun to tip out all the showbags onto my bedroom floor, count my lollies, go and say “nyer-nyer-ne-neyer-nyer” to my sisters ‘cos I got more, and then start the “I’ll give you one wizz fizz for 2 caramellos” game with them.
I think it was always the Tuesday of show week (maybe still?) that the newspaper came out with all the coupons and my sisters and I would fight over who got the coupons for what rides and what bags, until one of us got the bright idea of calling Nan to get her newspaper too.  Memories also of that ‘special show smell’ – a mixture of horse manure, doughnuts, sheep, hay and hot chips, that was just the right level of gross, and was always worse when up on the chair lift.

My three favourite memories of the Royal Show:  the first is finally getting the nerve to go on the Ranger.  The second is my sister getting sick after going on the gravitron.  The third (and very best) is watching the fireworks with my sister and my uncle, and watching with delight as an ember fell on top of my uncle’s head and sizzled away at his already sparse combover.  Unfortunatley this was in the days before cameras and videos in your phones (and I’m sure I didn’t have a phone then either), so I can only watch the replay in my mind.  I’d be happy to recreate the event for your viewing pleasure… not so sure my uncle would be up for it though.

So this week I got the bright idea of reliving all those fabulous times and going for a few hours in the evening.  I sent my husband a text with my fabulous idea and received an uber-enthusiastic reply of “Not really.  Do you wife?”, so I picked him up after work and we went (still very enthusiastically) to the show.

2 hours, a thousand midgies, three million teenagers (with entirely too-short shorts on), a corn on the cob and 2 showbags later, we were done.

“I’m sure it used to be bigger” I protested to my Qld  husband.  “Yes wife, I’m sure it was”.
“There used to be a lot more cool things to look at”  “Yes dear…. can we go home now?”

We did get to look at the photography exhibition, the cake decorating competition (husband was so excited about that one) and the baby animals, but someone forgot to tell me that there are conditions of entry to the show: you either have to be a child or have children to appreciate the show experience.

So I’ll erase this year, and cling onto my former memories of the show, and maybe one day return with some of those sticky minature versions of humans in tow.

HOWEVER – when editing my photos from our little adventure, I thought it would be an AMAZING place for a couples/engagement shoot!  On the ferris wheel … eating fairy floss… it would rock! If anyone is up for it this time next year let me know and we’ll lock it in!!! 🙂

Maybe I can just find someone and have a week-long romantic Spring affair that culminates in a photo shoot? That sounds PERFECT 🙂ReplyCancel
